Life is always challenging for a teenager, but for 16-year-old Nigel living in a dysfunctional household makes it even worse. His father Jim, an alcoholic and compulsive gambler, extorts him for board money while his submissive mother Sue just goes along with it. Nigel has always wanted something better than the crummy council house he's lived in most of his life with his insufferable parents, but without a leg to stand on financially he just can't see a way out.
